A German CV that is clear, relevant and easy to trust.
International applicants often receive contradictory advice about German CVs. Start with the principles that travel well across industries: relevance, evidence, readable chronology and honest practical information.
Start with the job, not your old CV
Use the vacancy as the reference point. Identify the responsibilities, tools, domain knowledge and outcomes the employer actually needs, then make the relevant evidence easy to find. Tailoring should improve clarity, not invent experience.
Make the timeline effortless to read
Use one date format throughout and keep employment and education in a clear reverse-chronological order. If a career gap needs context, explain it briefly rather than making the recruiter reconstruct your timeline.
Turn duties into evidence
A duty says what the role required. Evidence shows what you did with that responsibility. Prioritise examples with scope, frequency, scale, improvement or measurable outcomes when those numbers are real and defensible.
State language skills precisely
For international applicants, language ability can materially affect role fit. Avoid vague labels if you know your CEFR level. If you are still learning German, state the current level honestly rather than hiding it.
Remove relocation uncertainty
If your location, start date or relocation plan could cause uncertainty, make the practical situation clear. You do not need to turn your CV into an immigration document; the goal is to remove avoidable ambiguity.
Follow the employer's document request
There is no single application package that every German employer expects. Some request a cover letter, certificates or references; others do not. Follow the vacancy and application portal instead of adding documents by habit.
Do not confuse tradition with a universal requirement.
Application conventions differ across employers and industries. Treat optional personal details as choices, not automatic requirements. Prioritise professional relevance and the instructions in the vacancy.
